Modx for small community website

Hi all. I am new to Modx and still finding my way through the cms.

I wonder would modx be good idea to power small community website or I should be better off with more ’dedicated’ solutions?

What I need is few ’static’ pages, forum, contact page and event calendar. Nothing too fancy, few hundred members or so.

Also front page should contain mini event calendar, and other standard stuff, like latest registered users (preferably with pictures), number of people online, etc.

Tbh my biggest concern is the forum. Any ideas and/or suggestions very much appreciated.

The forum might be an issue, depending on what restrictions to joining and/or viewing content you might have. The lack of simple integration between the MODX user table and a.n.other forum is an issue. It can be bridged, but that requires expertise (and very few other systems have as good a community support as MODX). There is integrated and native discussion forum coming in a future version of the MODX addon Discuss, but that has a prerequisite of Revolution 2.1 - and even then I’d be reluctant to commit a production site to it.

If the social aspect is critical, you might want to look at other systems like Elgg, or paid-for systems like Ning. Also, some forum software like Vanilla will also let you publish a few pages as standalone items.

You can, in theory, bridge Vanilla to MODX using SingleSignOn, but I’ve found it broken in recent releases of the Vanilla software (and the connector plugin), and their forum support is almost non-existent. Other folk here use SMF as the forum, but I can’t comment on that.

Thank you for your answer; as I mentioned it is only small community, so I wouldn’t be worried about few glitches here and there. That revolution 2.1 you’re mentioning - when is it due?
