Multiple sites on a home server

I’m new to Revo, I’ve messed with CMS in the past but they all seem to restrictive and bloated. I like what I see with MODx so far.

I have an old computer set up at home as a LAMP server. I installed MODx Revo on there and things looked promising. I installed the MODx Sample Site with the idea of going through this, playing with various bits and probably breaking them and putting them back together along the way!

What I want to do is install a second site on MODx so that I can take pieces of the sample site over to my own site and see how to make them work. I have tried to follow various guides on setting up multiple domains, but this is not on an external server and so some of the changes to settings do not seem to apply as I am not using domain names.

Does anyone know of a way to set up two (or more) sites on an internal network host computer?

First "context" was the web sample from modx, I created a second context for my own work with these settings.

In INDEX.PHP I have

In config.core.php I have tried a few things:
define(’MODX_CORE_PATH’, ’usr/www/modx/core/’);
define(’MODX_CORE_PATH’, dirname(__FILE__) . ’/core/’);
and
define(’MODX_CORE_PATH’, dirname(__FILE__) . ’../core/’);

I’m still working on variations of the last bit.

Now when I try to access the page I get ERROR 503 Site temporarily unavailable.

At least the site knows there should be somthing there now

Did you copy config.core.php and index.php from modx root path to your site’s root path before modifying them ?

Yeah, coppied the three files directly on the server (including ht.access as they are.

If you’ve got the space, you could just create a second install of modx with its own database in a subdirectory rather than messing with contexts. That way you could simply transfer that site to a remote server if you decide to make it live.

define(’MODX_CORE_PATH’, ’/usr/www/modx/core/’);

If you want to set up multiple sites that are independent of each other, Apache virtual hosts are quite easy to use. There’s a good description of the process at http://johnbokma.com/windows/apache-virtual-hosts-xp.html.

Unlike Mr Bokma, I use my main PC as a web server for other PCs on my home network, so the firewall has to be set up for that, and it has to have a fixed IP that is referred to in the other machines’ hosts file.

The virtual server approach means I can keep mirrors of live sites on my PCs in a simple directory structure (and I use Evo anyway, so multiple sites would be more difficult than with Revo).
