Bob’s guides speak of a sample website included with install, but I think his guides reference either an outdated version of Revo, or Evo. Is there any way I can get a sample website or default template (not the bare bones BaseTemplate that comes with Revo) for Revo? I would like to start learning Revo, and I learn best by doing.

Yes, in Revo you can go to System -> Package Management, click on the "Download Extras" button and then just type "sample" in the search box at the upper left. Download the sample site and install it. Note that it may mess with existing content on your site and overwrite some snippets (I’m not sure).

How do the ’news’ and ’most recent’ chunks decide what to show? How can I alter this? For example, in the sample site both ’news’ and ’most recent’ only show new blog posts. What else can they show? How can I configure this?

I can’t remember the exact parameter, but you want to change the sort order (&sortBy or &orderBy). getResources sorts them by the named field (menuindex, createdon, editedon, etc.) and gets the ones at the top of the list.
