I’m voluntering to help a group with their IT needs and was asked to change a few words on a Modx site built by someone else on V 0.9.6.1p2 and have a urgent problem.
I don’t know Modx, but over time I have been able to edit pages and add pages.
I am not sure if this problem went unnoticed for a while or if it happened when I changed 10 words on the main page. When I went to check how it looked I was able to view the page, but I when I click any of the links (I did not change any links) they just hang for awhile then give a HTTP 505 Internal Service Error listing the page I am trying to reach. The browser then says "The website cannot display the page most likely causes the website is under maintenance or the website has a programming error".
For example www.byeenergy.com is the page I changed some words on. Any static link from that page like the technology one gives the error. Any dynamic link (dynamic might be the wrong term) like one of the press releases works fine. Also if manually enter www.byeenergy.com/pages/index.php?id=5 it does display the technology page.
I have full admin access, but want to be careful what I do. I don’t think I have the access to upgrade to a supported version and with a urgent need for this site on Monday I’d be reluctant to experiment. I did clear the cache after looking at some other posts in this forum. That didn’t help. Can anyone suggest what I can do? It looks like some index is messed up or something.
One more piece of information is before I edited the page I right clicked on it in MODx and selected duplicate document. That created a whole new tree of the site under the duplicate. I made sure nothing is published under there while I was trouble shooting and all of the documents do have another id after them so I don’t know if this contributes to the problem.
I have not been unable to figure out how to get a external backup of the site so I am now worried about deleting the duplicate version in case I need it. I will do that if it could be part of this problem. I just don’t want to make things worse.
When I click on the backup under Tools it does send a export of the site to /assets/export, but downloading it from there doesn’t work.
paulp, what browser are you using? I tried IE 8 and Firefox from 2 different computers in my house and I’m stuck.
Im on FF on a mac.
Have you changed something else because the URL’s are changing now but the content isnt and it was 10 mins ago when I first checked it.
I didn’t change anything. When you said it worked for you I did go to another PC and had the same experience as you with the links clicking, but the main page coming up for each one.
The main page is probably you 404 not found page ( check under the configuration ) so maybe your friendly URL’s ain’t working. do you have a .htaccess file in the root directory and have you altered it at all. Also clear the site cache "site >> clear cache"
All fixed. Thanks for the suggestions. There was a duplicate file hanging things up.
