Existing Site

I’m new to modx.

I’m taking over a static site and need a cms. Does integrating modx into a preexisting design require rebuilding the site or is it as simple as creating the db and adding some tags?

Creating a database doesn’t get the data into the new database. There is a feature in the Manager for importing static pages, but it still takes a lot of tedious hand work to get things where they ought to be. There’s really no easy way to do it.

I think I oversimplified my original post. I realize I still need to get the data into the db, that’s not my concern, I just don’t want to rebuild the entire site from the ground up in order to get it under modx control, which, it sounds like, is essentially what needs to happen. I was hoping that the process would be similar to a lightweight CMS such as Perch, for example; it would be straightforward to integrate it into a preexisting site, which it is. I would love to use modx but the client won’t pay to have the site rebuilt in modx.

If you have MODx set up, you simply need to put your template (html markup with links to css or however you coded it) and add the necessary tags like [*pagetitle*] and [*content*]. To get the best out of MODx you’ll want to use dynamic menus and things like that, but it’s not necessary.

You will be manually copying content into the manager.. but that’s the case whenever you want to start using a CMS to maintain a static website.
