I’m having something of a problem on the server of one of my clients. Whenever I install a 3PC through the package manager, the files are generated by a PHP-script (obviously). Files created this way have owner "nobody", and are unwritable for my FTP user. Is this something that can be helped? My hosting-provider’s really ticked off about it too, and can’t seem to work out a solution...

When you install a transport package using package manger anything that is written to disk in the process will become owned by your webserver name, ’nobody’ in your case, so other users won’t be able to access these files unless you give them the correct perms. Why do you want FTP write access on these files anyway? Which 3PC is this? If a 3PC installs files that need to be writeable by all(or some) users it should set these perms as part of the package install I guess.

Ah yes, I see, unfortunately you need to be root or nobody to remove these, it may be possible to do a ’force remove package’ on your installed packages before you go for the re-install but I’m not sure how ’completely’ this does it.

On providers setup using PHP as an Apache module, this is the way things work (and if your provider is getting mad about the way they configured PHP, you might have bigger worries). You should be able to remove files added via PHP via the Files tab in the manager (though CPanel providers typically provide this same feature directly on the account).
