I just installed MODx 1.0.3 on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx notebook with PHP 5.3.2, MySQL 5.1.41 and Apache 2.2.14. I get this message when I attempt to go to http://localhost/manager:
"Could not load DBAPI class."
Am I missing something? MODx is installed in the /var/www/ directory. There were no problems during the installation.

Localhost is the most common "hostname" for the database; it’s relative to where the MySQL server is to the PHP script accessing it. For example, my local XAMPP uses "localhost", and so does my remote Solaris VPS in California since the Apache server and the MySQL server are on the same physical server.

It’s possible that one or more files were missed or corrupted in the download/upload process.
This is the line that is failing:
include_once MODX_BASE_PATH . 'manager/includes/extenders/dbapi.' . $database_type . '.class.inc.php')
See if the file: manager/includes/extenders/dbapi.mysql.class.inc.php exists.
The file is present and seems to have the correct content. How is MODX_BASE_PATH set?
MODX_BASE_PATH is set in manager/includes/config.inc.php
Do you have friendly URL’s turned on? If so, make sure to rename ht.access to .htaccess in the /manager folder.
I don’t know what happened during or after the install, but my config.inc.php file was empty. I reinstalled with a fresh copy of MODx and it works like a charm.
