[SOLVED] Doc Manager reset (deleted content) on all TVs in an entire section

OK, obviously I missed something very big here and have cause a MASIVE disaster.

I tried to use Doc Manager to set a template variable on a whole bunch of documents. But not only did it not update that particular TV, it reset all the other TVs - I stupidly thought any I left blank, wouldn’t be changed.

I’m assuming you can’t use Doc Manager unless every page has the exact same content - is that how it works?

Any help would be appreciated.

I’m not a DocManager expert, but it looks like you forgot to fill in the "Ignore These TVs" field (which, IMO, should be a set of checkboxes marked "Change these TVs"). Opt-in is almost always friendlier and safer than opt-out.

If I’m right, DM should probably do a better job of warning you about what can happen if you leave that field blank.

TBH, I don’t know what the intended behavior is, but DM probably shouldn’t overwrite a TV that has been set with a blank value unless the user selects or enters something in that TV in DM. I’ve never used the TV part of DM, so I can’t tell what the "normal" behavior is.

None of which helps you. I hope you have a recent backup or at least can remember what the settings are.

Note that you can not only set a TV’s Default Value field to @INHERIT to have it inherit the value from a parent or ancestor, but that you can still specify a default value with something like:



IIRC, if you change this in the TV itself, you’ll still have to save all the documents to have it take effect.

Thank you so much for the reply - it took me a long time to figure out where the "Ignore these Template Variables" field was!

You’re right, it should be more in your face and it’s a bit of a pain to turn off ManagerManager to figure out what the real TV names are so you can fill in the correct data into this field - check boxes would make a big difference.

Unlike human tragedy I was able to restore from backup - but did waste 5 hours work.

I tried to get @INHERIT to work a few weeks ago but I had no idea you have to save all the documents before it will work so will check that out now.

Once you’ve saved a document with a value in the TV, editing the TV’s default value won’t have any effect (and you wouldn’t want it to), so if you want a chain of TVs with @INHERIT and they are in existing documents, you’ll have to change them manually (or risk using DM again).

The default value is for new documents, which figures if you think about it. Revolution has a handy "Set to Default" button that will set the TV to the default value for you.

Seriously though, can’t wait for the GA release of Revolution and think all the time you and the many other people put into Modx (and the forums) is amazing.

It’s actually pretty satisfying, especially with so many positive vibes from the community, but I’d rather not think about the total amount of time (5,000+ posts @ 15 min per post =~ 1,250 hours). I’ve worked for $100/hr so somebody owes me about $125,000 (though I’d settle for $90,000).

I hate to think what OpenGeek, splittingred, and others are due -- my time is a small fraction of theirs.
