modx 1.0.2 evolution- problem installing on Wampserver

Hey folks,

I’ve been reading the boards and googling for hours. I can’t find any information that’s worked so far in getting me past the 1st set up screen. I keep getting Connection to Host: Failed!.

I’m running Wampserver with Apache 2.2.11, PHP 5.3.0 and MySQL 5.1.36 versions.

I’ve created and recreated a modx user in my database. Created and dropped a modx db a number of times but the result hasn’t changed. I’ve tried to use the root account as well but nada.

I read that ModX would try to create the database if there was none...I haven’t experienced that at all.

Can anyone walk me through this?

Seems silly but amazingly enough this is driving me nuts and it’s just step 1.

Just to update: I’ve downloaded and tried to install 2.0.0 b5.

On the 1st screen where it says:

Please enter the name of the database created for MODx. If you there is no database yet, the installer will attempt to create a database for you. This may fail depending on the MySQL configuration or the database user permissions for your domain/installation.

Now please enter the login data for your database.

I leave the database login name and password empty and then click on Test database server connection and view collations. and I get: Connecting to mysql server: Success!

All’s well up to this point. I then proceed to click on Create or test selection of your database. and am met with Checking database:Could not connect to the mysql server.

I’m no systems wizard so I’m not even sure where to begin looking to figure out what I’ve done wrong. If anyone has any idea where my configuration has gone awry I’d appreciate the help.

Couple of things could be going on. Make sure your database collation that you used when creating the database matches the one that displays after the first step, and that the charset matches the database collation set. Another thing to try is SET NAMES instead of SET CHARACTER SET.

I would try creating the DB yourself and add a user who has full rights to it.

Then enter the info for that DB/user in the setup screen. It’s often necessary to do it this way.

I don’t know if this will help the OP (or anyone else) but I had similar difficulties setting up my first install of MODx evolution on Wampserver today.

I had no idea what information I was meant to provide in the Database login name and Database password fields. Mary advised "the information you enter here is generally your login information for your server" which didn’t help me much, being a WAMP newb as well as a MODx newb.

Anyway, I managed to figure out that the login information for the default installation of Wampserver 2.0 is login ID "root" and no password. This information is visible if you browse phpMyAdmin from the Wampserver manager icon in your Windows tray, and click on "Privileges".

Entering this information on the MODx install page allowed my installation to continue and MODx then set up its own database.
