Help!
I am very new to MODx this is my first attempt. I finally got MODx installed but when I access the manager and click on home 9or any of the site pages. I get the following error.

MODx encountered the following error while attempting to parse the requested resource:
« Execution of a query to the database failed - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ’@localhostsite_tmplvars ORDER BY name ASC’ at line 1 »
SQL: SELECT name,type,id FROM Mark@localhostsite_tmplvars ORDER BY name ASC

Any help would be very much appreciated on this error.
Is this CMS suitable for a person who is more a designer (with a fair knowledge of html and css) than a developer? I feel I have fumbled my way through my first endeavors in to the program. Is this just part of the steep learning curve or could it be I have bitten of more than I can chew?

The header errors are caused by the original database error being fired off by PHP before MODx tries to send its errors.
Your problem is the SQL issue. It looks like you used your database login for the table prefix, and/or for the database name when you first installed the site.
I agree with Susan. I think you just put something in the wrong field when you installed MODx.
If you don’t have any important content yet, I would go into PhpMyAdmin (via cPanel or the equivalent) and "Drop" all the tables in the MODx DB. To do that, look at the bottom of the table list. You’ll see a "check all" option or something similar. Click on it, then use the drop-down next to it and select "drop" then click on the "Go" button.
Then edit the manager/includes/config.inc.php file, delete everything in it, and save it. This will put you back where you were just before the install.
Now, redo the install being careful to put the right things in the right fields (leave the table prefix as "modx_").
If you have the same problem again (you shouldn’t), it probably means that one or more files was corrupted when you FTP’d them to the site and you’ll have to do that again.
It’s hard to say if MODx is right for you. If you know HTML and CSS, you should be able to use MODx without much trouble once you get past the installation (which goes pretty smoothly most of the time).
It might be worth knowing that there are hosts, such as Bluehost.com, that have a built-in installer for MODx that makes the process very painless and much simpler.
Also, many people install XAMPP or MAMP to create a server on their local machines and install MODx there locally while learning it.

I am now going to try installing XAMPP to see if I can test sites on the PC too.

MODx rocks because it lets you control the html output 100%!
There is existing add-ons for most stuff. This forum and community
loves to help you mangle code and solutions.
When I started with MODx, I knew no PHP. Thanks to customizing PHP in existing snippets, plugins and modules. I slowly
became so good that I now can write basic PHP from my head.
Many of us were not fluent in PHP when we started with MODx.

Though I feel modx is a great journey with many lessons to learn along the way. I have learn’t the first and probably the most important one - If I get totally stuck, hit the forums and the community like you said.
