I want to install MODx on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server edition on a home server to develop several websites. The install wiki does not make any suggestions about directory structure. The multiple website support thread from a single MODx install appears to be complex for a beginner, so my question is, how to install MODx for learning now and future multiple site development? My apache root is /www/, so should I put MODx there or in a subdirectory?

To develop multiple sites for independent hosting on commercial servers, I would assume each site needs a directory with MODx and its own database on my home development machine? All tips appreciated.

Each MODx installation should be in its own directory and have its own database; although if you use different table prefixes for each installation you could use the same database (not much point in doing that, though, unless for some reason you’re limited to only one database).
With friendly URLs and subdirectories, make sure that you edit each one’s .htaccess file to specify the correct RewriteBase value (such as /learnmodx).
