Hi all,
I’ve ported a complete site from my local environment over to a live server following the instructions in the docs. Problem is, the remote server doesn’t let me change the read/write permissions on the necessary folders at their destination on the server (because of some #&$! restrictions the provider has set up). Apart from that, the site seems to work fine, although I notice a somewhat decreased performance compared to other modx sites run on other servers.
How important are the world read/write permissions on those specific folders and are they related to the site performance anyhow? I’d rather choose another provider if the choice was mine, but in this case it isn’t.

Most likely the remote server is running PHP with some kind of suexec (when the script is executed its user is switched to the owner of the script), so "world" writable permissions are not only unnecessary but undesirable. One way to tell is to check the MODx Manager’s File Manager. If all of the directories show as writable, and the upload field is available, then that’s what is going on. Usually in this case permissions are required to be 755 for directories and 644 for files.
