Using MODx for document exachnge

Hi,
I’m new to MODx (but not at all to programming). I want to create a web site which allows web users to upload documents (*.pdf, *.png, etc.) which should then be listed in a directory-like list (containing a file name chosen during upload, a comment, and the user name and date of upload). Web users should be able to select files for online viewing or downloading. Upload, directory and file view, and download should only be accessible to registered users.
I found the FileUpload snippet but I cannot imagine how to create the directory.
Of course I’m willing to read all available documentation and do the required programming, but if anyone has ever done that before, I’d prefer not to reinvent the wheel. Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

Years ago I wrote a document management system with checkin/checkout, download and upload features based on users and group, where the person uploading the document could select which users could have what access to the document in question. It’s functional, but not very pretty. I’ve attached the zip file; you might find it at least a good starting point.

Hi Susan, what a lively forum... and thanks for your reply. Since there seems to be no out-of-the box solution, I will try to work up something myself. I will take your project as a starting point but must do some reading about PHP before I really start writing code.
