Best practice for keeping up-to-date database backups

Up until now, I have just been doing a database backup periodically from within ModX (whenever I tend to think about it). As our site is getting more heavily used with content being added continually I think this is no longer a good or reliable practice. What I think is really needed is an automated mysql database backup, say once a day. I suppose the way this would work is to save the backup in a folder on the web server and then this file would somehow get FTP’d to my computer on a regular basis.

My question is how are others making sure to always have up-to-date backups that are saved on a remote computer and not just saved on the web server? Are you using any special scripts or programs?

Well, I believe I have found a decent solution. I have found a program I can run on my PC that automatically backs up all my remote MySql databases on a scheduled basis. Looks great so far. . .

Hmm, the server-side approach does look more appealing. That way, I don’t have to have this client program running all the time. . .
