Simple noob question

I am wanting to experiment with modx on my current site. The installation instructions say to install all files in the root directory. The problem is one of the files is index.php. My homepage is already index.php. How do I install modx without overwriting my current site? Thanks.

I’m afraid MODx needs index.php to work since it dispatces all requests through there. Your best bet is to put MODx in a subdirectory. It will work fine there and won’t interfere with your current site at all. Friendly URLs are a little trickier in a subdirectory (not much), but if you’re just playing around, you won’t need to turn them on.

Another option is to install MODx on your computer locally to test it, this way you won’t mess up your main site. Then when you’re ready you can move it and overwrite your main site if you want to, but doing it on a localhost setup on your own computer will give you the freedom to play around and test it without risking anything.

It will definitely work fine, you’ll just have to do a little more typing to get to the site.

Where would I find documentation and information on doing a localhost setup on my computer?

Basically, you just install XAMPP, put the MODx files in the htdocs directory (or one below it if you might have more than one install) and type:



in the browser address bar.

The XAMPP install is also fairly simple and will install PHP, MySQL, and an Apache server on your local machine.

I ended up using your tutorial as well as the wiki to finally download and install Modx on localhost. It was great help.
