Move site from MAMP localhost to remote host (MediaTemple)gs

Ok so I initially tied the following method last night:

But when I tried this, checking my config.inc.php was correct and navigating to www.mydomain.com/manager
I was unable to login see: http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,40113.0.html
I know the config.inc.php was correct because I takes me to the login screen. If I changed the settings in the config to something wrong I get a ’failure to connect to database message’.

When I transfered the site over to (MT) if I naviated to mydomain.com/index.php I would get a load of db error messages. Which I assume is the result of not specifying the correct paths as I am unable to login to the manager.

So.. Instead I am going to try a fresh install on my Media Temple host as per this post:http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,1417.0.html. What I need to know about transferring a site using this method is when do I import the existing database to my new database? After I have done the install/upgrade procedure OR before making the database connection during the install/upgrade procedure?

I have just uploaded a fresh MODx 1.0.0 to my (MediaTemple) via FTP (takes quite a while) but really want to check this before I go any further.

Try uploading the local installation of MODx to your hosting plus the installer (install directory).
Then got to yourhostingdomain.com/install and it should offer you a update/upgrade install.
Do that but uncheck to install any components (they should already be there).

Maybe after that you have to set the paths in tools -> configuration to the right places.

I had the same issue when I migrated my site. However, when I ran the install I forgot to choose the upgrade and uncheck all of the items under the list.

I’m assuming that when you don’t uncheck, the data in your database gets changed.

So, I started over again. Dumped the remote DB and then re-imported the local one, ran the install and unchecked all items and I was golden.

Following the MODx documentation to the "t" will work in most cases. I got ahead of myself and made a mistake. But as long as your local install stays intact, you can ALWAYS start fresh.
