Value creating issues...

Hey, I have been integrating some charts and graphs in to a site and the graph runs from a custom XML feed I made in a snippet... it’s taking values from a database table and displays the info in the chart.

I want to display a chart based on who created a particular document which works if I hard code the value... $authorid = 12; for example but if I use the following methods it returns the exact same value but the charts are not working.

I run this code in the snippet that creates the XML

I used the above code in another snippet and put this code in the XML snippet

both codes work if run in a separate snippet but it will not work with my chart. Why would hard coding the value work but not pulling the createdby info? I don’t get it since it’s returning a basic value? Ideas?

I’m not completely clear on what you’re doing, but you can use the second argument to runSnippet() to send some information to the other snippet.

Hi Bob, I already tried that method. All I am trying to do is get the graph to display results from a database that has 5 fields, 1 of which is ID which is the same ID as the person who created that document in modX. I just need to take a simple integer and place in to the DB results WHERE attribute.



Not a single result is appearing but if I change $webuserId to $webuserId = 12; it will give me the result I require. 12 being the userID of the person who created the document as I stripped off the "-" due to the fact it was a webuser who created the document.

as I said, it works if I hardcode the the $webuserId but it doesn’t work if trying to get the value from modx. It’s all in the same DB but just doesn’t like the value modx is giving it for some odd reason. Why would the value from the createdby result be any different from the hardcoded value? That’s what I don’t get.

I actually got my post mixed up a little, I did the alterations but still not working.




Something very odd about this... I changed the database field to include the "-" for the field I want to display.

$webuserId should dispaly -12 as it’s the ID of the user who created the page but it’s not working with the chart. If I hardcode it to $webuserId = -12; it works. Why would the above code not work the same way as the hardcoded value if it should return the exact same value?

it displays -12 in the document but it just won’t work with in this other snippet I made unless I hardcode the value, which I don’t want to do.

Could it be that the value you are receiving from the database is coming through as a string where as forcing the value is producing an integer?

I have no idea what is causing the issue but I decided to try another chart creation software and it seems to be working using the same methods... No idea why since the PHP is completely separate but seems to be working!

Worth noting also that the above technique doesn’t always work, though I’ve never figured out why. Sometimes you have to pass $modx as an argument to the function.

When writing plugins -> In the switch I have to use an "&"
$output = &$modx->documentOutput;
(don’t remember what you call this)
This is NOT needed outside the switch!?

That’s reference variable and it’s needed so that you modify the actual output rather than a copy of it.

I was referring to cases where the $modx object isn’t available inside a function even with the global $modx line. You get a "function call on a non-object" error message.
