Checking database: failed - could not create database (RESOLVED)

First off I’ve read through and followed the many previous posts referring to the same circumstance.
I still can not get beyond this point.

My environment:
Operating system Linux
Kernel version 2.6.28.9
Machine Type i686
Apache version 2.2.11 (Unix)
PERL version 5.8.8
PHP version 5.2.9
MySQL version 5.1.30
cPanel Build 11.24.5-RELEASE 38506

The Scenario
This is my first time install. This process is to get me through the installation learning curve and learn the interface and module installs. It is not a client – production setup.

I figured if I was going to explore modx I would cut my teeth on the latest beta release.
MODx Revolution 2.0.0-beta-3 Release Date: July 23rd, 2009

After failing to get beyond: Checking database: failed - could not create database

I deleted all files from server and started from step one several times with no hope. Finally I deleted all files from the server and uploaded MODx Evolution 1.0.0 Release Date: July 31, 2009.

No luck.

The steps I’ve taken to get to this point

cPanel MySQL® Databases
create database modx
create user ****
give user ALL privileges
add user **** to database modx

Upload all files

Follow fresh installation steps:

Being a *nix user?? I followed the instructions setting required folders to 777, I copied config.inc.php.blank back to my hard drive and saved it as config.inc.php and then uploaded. I set both config.inc.php.blank, and config.inc.php to 777.

Still no luck.
I turn to the forums and search for similar issues.
I change the connection.databasetest.php string if (!@ mysql_select_db(str_replace("`", "", $database_name), $conn)) {

Still no luck.

I’ve deleted the modx database to see if modx would create it from scratch.
No luck
I’ve recreated the database.
No luck.

I think (hope)I am overlooking a small DUH detail somewhere.
Any help getting me up and running will be appreciated.

Additional information:

I am connecting to the host.
Connection to host: passed - collations now available

the issue I have is after the host connection.

Also,
I’ve tried messing with the Connection method: SET CHARACTER SET and SET NAMES
No Luck

I’ve set the permission to 777 on ALL files. That did not go over well.
I am deleting all files again and will start from scratch. Again.

I am not sure if it matters but my host is hostgator and I have a reseller account. The cpanel is a sub account from the master account.

I believe HostGator uses suPHP on all shared servers, so the permissions have to be 755 for folders and 644 for files. I think that would explain all your symptoms.

I’ve uploaded the files and went through the process again leaving folders set to 755 and files set to 644.
No Luck.
I utilized another site under the same account and run into the identical problem.

I am completely baffled.

There must be a setting somewhere that I am missing.

What exactly is happening. Is it still saying it can’t connect to the DB?

And, are you putting in the full database name and user credentials, as described here (prefixing the database name/database user with your cPanel username): http://support.hostgator.com/articles/cpanel/how-to-connect-to-the-mysql-database

I finally turned to host gator support.
I described my issue and provided login info in chat and the tech disappeared for about 20 minutes.
The tech came back and said he could not figure out the issue. He thought I might have been missing files.

I thanked him for his time and went back to tinker with settings and the database logged right in.

I have no idea what he did when he could not find the problem but it worked.
