thanks again sottwell!

none of the SQL commands work for me though, i get errors

i contacted the support of the webhost to help me out, since they couldn’t give me a time frame when they will update their MySQL version...then i found out their current PHP version is 4.2.3 with "register_globals" set to "on" which is a nice mismatch to the phpinfo they showed me a couple of days ago (PHP Version 5.2.9 ) when i asked them about the server settings

i’m in ancient webhosting hell!

Sounds like you need to run away, fast. Either incompetent or just lying to get the business.
