What version should I be using?

Should I be using the GA? There’s two other versions, and I don’t want to be left behind if MODX changes. Also, is there a calendar module for MODx?

I’m currently reviewing options for picking a CMS. I’d rather not learn the 0.9.6.3 thing if I immediately need to junk that for Revolution. And find the Evolution bit a bit confusing too. Given that I’m very new to CMS and MODx I find the descriptions in ’New 2.0 Features’ from the Announcements kind of go over my head a bit.

Should I just go for Revolution to learn the system and hope it goes GA before I need to use it in anger (6-8 weeks from now)?

Revo is still in beta 2 and is a complete rewrite. If you need GA in 6-8 weeks, I would hold off and stay on the classic code base.

Evo 1.0 is an improved and tremendously cleaned up version of 0.9.6.3. There will be a migration tool for Evo/096x sites to Revo once Revo is officially released.

It sounds like Evo is the right choice for you both. If you’re an adept developer though, I’d certainly recommend Revo.

I got same question as those above but my time frame and goals are a bit different.
I have to redesign and modernize a middle sized news portal.
This includes: new HTML and CSS, migrating database from MS Access, configuring news in several categories with comments, some polls, video (youtube) and photo galleries in few categories.
At the moment the database is bigger then 5000 documents so I consider Revolution as final solution. My time frame is not very strict but it is expected to be finished in 3-4 months.

What can you suggest me?
Shell I start with Evolution and migrate to Revolution after new release or to start with Revolution right away?

I would suggest starting out with Evo due to the time frame and availability of tested addons. There’s addons for most if not all of those tasks you want done.

I suppose you didn’t mean putting those 5000 documents in the MODx document tree?

You being good with CSS and HTML is a definite plus. You don’t need the PHP skills to use MODx though it is an added bonus especially when it comes to custom snippets. You will find the community very helpful though in this and other regards.

I am having a problem with Evolution.

I am thinking that maybe I should have starting with 0.9.6 because many of the snippets I have tried to use aren’t compatible with Evolution (tagLinks, phpthumb).

Should I wipe everything and install 0.9.6? Will it be upgradable to Evo, then Revo, later on?
