I’m confused on which version of MODx to install (and of course, waited until 11:30 Saturday night when nobody is around to ask <g>)

I see MODX Evolution v 1.0.1 released day before yesterday, but don’t see any installation instructions for it.

Then there are Beta versions labeled MODx Revolution 2.0.0 and a few other versions (which I assume are the precursors to "Evolution??")

And then the site says there are no "alpha" releases available. But isn’t Evolution a stable alpha version now since the release of the 22nd?

Or should I go with the "stable" MODx 0.9.6.3 (which is the only installation that the install instructions on the site cover as far as I can see.)

PLEASE help me. I’m trying to learn this program on the fly AND finish a website over the weekend and I suspect that might be a bit too optimistic!

    Thanks!

      Hi lindagal2,

MODX Evolution v 1.0.1 is basically the next version of the 0.9.6.3 branch (improved & stable), so installation is the same as for 0.9.6.3 -> http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/MODx096/Installation ( for evo, folder media, flash and files need to be world-writeable (777) too )
i recommend you go with MODX Evolution v 1.0.1

depends on the website you’re trying to accomplish smiley

Evolution is stable (general release, not alpha) and you can start using it.

Revolution is a new code base and is in its beta stages. This is complete re-write of MODx with lots of improvements, but for now its aimed at people who aren’t faint of heart.

One more thing, Evolution has lots of addons available, while Revolution has very little.

Evolution 1.0.1 is successor of 0963.

edit: Sharkbait beat me to it tongue

You peeps are brilliant .. thank you so much. I’m making the site for a friend, gratis, and haven’t done web design for a few years. I’m hoping this isn’t a case of my poor friend "getting what you pay for"!!

Installing 1.0.1 now and we’ll see how it goes. Hopefully there are a few night-owls out there checking the board every so often. If not ... well, nothing good is ever easy, right?

Incidentally, some of the things I’m interested in are allowing the website client to post his twitter feed on the front page of the site. Also want to include a calendar at some point and ultimately make it so client can do updates to a "news/shout" box, add pictures to a gallery, and update a few other select items. I’ll post a pic of the mockup I did for the site after I finish install .. y’all can tell me if I’m being too opimistic! smiley

Wow... I’m so lost. I can’t get past the part where it asks for the database information. I gave the login ip that my hosting company sent me when I log into the site, and my user name and password (my ip number and colon with a a 4-digit number at the end, for example, something like 00.53.13.172:2082). However, when I click "test database server connection and view collations" ... nothing. It doesn’t even seem to register. (Then when I try something else, like my www site addres, I get a red "connection failed")

Do I have to create a database first? And is my user/password the same as the name I log into the site with or do I have to get a special one for the database?

Also, do I have the MODx files in the correct directory? Generally to access a page I have to put the files in the public_html directory. Originally I uploaded the entire MODx folder, with the install files, etc. When that didn’t seem to work, I moved all the MODx files into the public_html directory. However, installation says put those files in your root directory. So am I doint that right or should it go in the directory above my public_html directory?

                Thanks so much!

Any help is gratefully appreciated! (Apparently I’m *really* bad at this.)

Duh! Just found the answer to some of my questions by reading some posts in the "best secrets" thread and realizing there’s an actual MODx wiki. So found a better installation guide. (I was using the install guide on the site here, which says nothing about creating a database that I saw, and just basically says, "upload and point to the index.php in the install directory".)

Here on the MODx wiki there is what looks to be a much better install tutorial:
                  http://wiki.modxcms.com/index.php/Installation_Guide

I note the first thing after "upload" is create a damn database. laugh I’ll work on that and then come back with the other questions if they’re not solved.

(Thank you guys ... and the wiki guys! I’m sure there will be loads more questions)

Okay ... one step further along but still lost.

I created a database using MySQL and associated the user with the db (as well as checking "all" rights. The one thing that I did not do (which was listed in the "create database tutorial" was "access hosts" as follows:

                    5. The final step is access hosts, here we use ’local host’ so no fields are required to be filled out, just press "Add Host".

That info wasn’t listed in my version of MySQL via cPanel. ??

So now I’m stuck on the whole database part of the install yet again ... What do I put for the database host? (I’ve got the login and password).

                    Thanks!

PS. I’m not sure the IP number ... the info I got from my webserver is one of the DNS numbers then a colon and a 4-digit nubmer at the end. For example, something like this: 00.53.13.172:2082. However, when I click "test database server connection and view collations" ... nothing. It doesn’t even seem to register. (Then when I try something else, like my www site addres, I get a red "connection failed")

And to repeat my question above (since I’m stuck again) is my user/password the same as the name I log into the site with or do I have to get a special one for the database?

Also, do I have the MODx files in the correct directory? Generally to access a page I have to put the files in the public_html directory. Having them in the public_html folder is correct.

                      As for the database stuff:

the server is localhost ( notice there’s no space )

your user name will normally be the user name to log into cpanel plus the user name you gave the database.

So for example you use great to log into cpanel and you created the database username as bad the username for the databas during the install would be great_bad

The same applies for the database name, it would be great_database name
