The question seems trivial, but I couldn’t find a definite answer after considerable search. I need a separate installation, each with its own database, for every subdomain.
The fact that the installation instructions require Modx files to be copied to a specific directory in the root directory suggests that only one installation is possible, because there is only one root directory. I appreciate any help on this.
That should be fine. The "root" means the root of the MODx install, not the root of your account so each subdomain will have it’s own root for MODx purposes (e.g. public_html/subdomain/)
You’ll love MODx 2.0 Revolution (coming "real soon now") which will allow you to have one MODx core (which can actually be above public_html for much better security) shared between several subdomain installs.
Thanks Bob. I’d love to get my hands on Revolution and work with it, but unfortunately I have some time constraints. Could you give me a hint about how soon this "real soon" is (days, weeks, or more than a month)?

The SVN version of Revolution (alpha) is available now. It’s relatively stable and I have a live site that’s been using it for a while (
http://wordsmatter.softville.com). The Revolution Beta is due out soon but I can’t say exactly when (because I don’t know). A month or so would be my uneducated guess.
Thanks. Since my site is already live on version 0.9.6.3 and I can’t risk any downtime, I’ll wait for the official release of Revolution to upgrade. In the meantime, I’ll use separate MODx installations for my subdomains.
