as I said I suspect part of it may be a caching issue.
What I do when I’m building a site or a new page is turn the "cacheable by default" option off.
You can do this per page via the page settings tab or for the whole site in the tools/configuration area.
Or you can simply do a forced refresh in your browser.
You won’t actually lose any changes you’ve made, (as long as you’ve saved them). The browser or your ISP is just calling a stored version of the page rather than the one you just saved.
As for why you lose Quickedit, I’m not sure about that one.

I suspect that you’re getting switched between www.domain.com and domain.com. You’re logged in to one of these but not the other.
I’m testing locally on localhost
I’ve unchecked cacheable box for all pages
Refreshed, reloaded, closed down browser, tested in other browsers, re-opened, logged out and back into manager etc
I’ve noticed however, if I rename the about.php to aboutbk.php, when I’m using user friendly urls and click on about.php, the page cannot be displayed, so does this mean that it is still trying to point to the old file and not the new file that has been changed

Well no, that means everything’s working. If you change it to aboutbk.php and then try the url about.php then it should be blank ’cos you’ve changed the name.
As for why you lose quickedit, I don’t know. I suspect there’s some setup or configuration setting that’s not set properly.
Hopefully someone with more in depth Quickedit experience can help.
