[Solved] Move local development site to hosting server

It seems that things have been mixed up exporting and importing the database, and I think maybe you are trying to export and import all of your databases - not just the MODx one.  As I said I’m no expert and there are definately more experienced people than me at this administration stuff, but this is how I do it:

Export database via local PHPMyAdmin:

- select the MODx database from the left-hand list
- click the export tab at the top
- down near the bottom make sure the "save as file" is checked
- click "go"

Import database via hosting PHPMyAdmin:

- select the database you created on left hand side
- click the import tab at the top
- click browse and find the saved database on your computer
- click go at the bottom


You definitely don’t want to drop any databases, so if you get that message don’t carry on - this shouldn’t happen though if you do the above.

It doesn’t matter if the database you created on your hosting has a different name to your development one - you can change it in the config file later.

We’re definitely only trying to export and import the database used in our local Modx install. The only reason why we’re asking about duplication is because we got an error when trying to import the database into the host database - it said that the "localdatabasename" didn’t have permission.

BUT... We decided to duplicate the local database and use the same name as the host database and export it. This one has successfully imported into the host - step 3 done, now onto step 4.

OK, have completed steps 1 through 6 and can log into the manager.

We’re just having issues with setting the paths - based on the Modx Wiki we thought this was done in the Host’s admin panel, not Modx! So thanks for clearing that up j_p.

What should the paths be? We’ve made guesses based on the local install and what we can see when we SFTP into our account but none seem to work - the site will preview but the file manager can’t find the images folder so we suspect the other ones (interface paths) are also wrong.

Any help on this last part would be much appreciated.

The last thing seems to be a permissions issue in the file manger.

I can preview the site but I can’t see any images in the image folder when I use the file manager to browser for assets. I also get a permissions error when I try to create a folder even though we gave all the asset folders 777 access as per the Modx wiki article.

Have tried the Upgrade Install option a couple of times as well.

Check the permissions of the image folder itself.

Thanks Bob, have double checked the images folder and it it is set to 777, in fact I did a 777 on the Assets folder and all enclosing items originally.

Maybe it’s Transmit, (the FTP client I’m using) as it’s definitely seems like a permissions thing.

Have double-checked the permissions using the host’s file browser and everything seems to check out.

I just keep getting the error: "You have no permissions to create the folder" when I try to create a test folder from the File Browser. BTW, these are the paths Modx created when I did the Upgrade Install - could they be wrong?

Yep I know, getting pretty desperate now.

It’s strange to think that in just a few days (and with no previous development experience) we were able to create a blog site with categories and auto populating content using Modx. But then it’s taken a whole day to upload it to a server - and we still can’t get it working!

Have to say that you guys in the community have been bloody awesome though.

I found a full path in the PHPInfo file and changed the paths to what you suggested and everything works - thank you so much for taking the time to check out the thread and post the working answer.

Just for my future reference (and anyone else using (mt)) here are the paths that worked:

One thing I did before changing the paths was change the version of PHP from 4 to 5 (noticed this in the (mt) manager area) - but nothing worked until the paths were changed so don’t know if the php version matters.

Also, I changed the Resource Path to "assets/" as I discovered that using Lucy’s path will not make relative paths to your assets.
