Subdomains and content manager

Hi all
I want a development site on my website. My initial idea where to create a subdomain and then copy the entire content of the 2-level domain into my subdomain.

All this is done and I can acces a content manager called subdomainname.maindomain.dk

However - when I use this manager to change something - the changes are visible both on maindomain.dk and subdomainname.maindomain.dk

How come?

I copied the folder public_html (with all its content)

The idea is that changes made on the subdomain manager only should be visible on the subdomain and vice-versa.

Can anyone tell me where I made a mistake - or another and better way to achieve the samme effect?
