MODx can easily handle a review site. You could basically do it out of the box with the default add-on set (Ditto, Jot, Wayfinder and AJAXSearch). There are some additional addons that may be cool like RateAnything for a star rating method, tvTagCloud for a nice tag cloud. It all depends on what you want to do.
Where you will be the most frustrated will be setting up the system for the user generated content (I did not catch the ’user’ part before). Here you can use the default snippet NewsPublisher which is simple to use but a little limited in terms of custom content fields (Template Variables in MODx) but there is a wealth of info on expanding it but it is not organized so you will need to search and aske for help if needed. The other option is FDM (Front-end Document Manager) which is in perpetual beta but is used a lot (it is in beta because the developer put the project asside to work on a new version for the upcoming Revolution release).

in search of a "framework" that simply allows "mysql form" processing (and there are many to look over)
for example
user creation
user profile
user input
modperl worked well a decade ago, surely "now" there must be a "framework" setup to accomplish the
basic task of "mysql form" processing ?
(could not see any "new post" flags so this is where i jumped in as others also chirped about form ’abc’

thanks again for the help. ive been on many support forums for shopping carts and the like and never got such good and quick responses. seems like a great tool and cool community already. had a quick play with modx so far and seems reasonably intuitive and exciting. im sure i’ll be back here if i get stuck.
