Hi, I got the Server connection and login information to work, Now I need to fill out the Connection method: and
Collation:.
So, what do I select for those two areas?
Connection method:
Collation:
It was set on Set character set
and the Collation: Automatically went to utf8_general_ci
I tried Clicking on (Click here to create your database or to test the selection of your database) just to see if it would work and it did not.
So I tried Set Names
And kept the same (Collation: utf8_general_ci) And it did work but is that what I want?
Database is set on latin_swedish (default) so in order to use preferred utf8 you maybe have to
manually go change it in PHPMyAdmin?
But What do those to options do?
I selected
Connection method: Set Names
Collation: utf8_general_ci
Checking database: passed - database selected
So it looked like it worked
But is that what I want selected or Are you saying set it up like
Connection method: Set Character Set
Collation: latin_swedish

Yes, I think you will end up with: Collation: latin_swedish
if you don’t change it or ask your host to do it. It doesn’t have to be utf8,
latin_swedish runs nice as well, but utf8 - is what you "want".
SET NAMES forces the connection charset to whatever you specify, which will translate characters between charsets, but that process is lossy. Instead, you should make sure your database container is set the same as your intended character set. SET CHAR SET actually uses the value of the database container to set the connection charset, regardless of what character set you specify for MODx to use. If you ensure that the database container has the proper charset for the data your are storing in the actual tables, and that your database_connection_charset setting in MODx either matches this, or another charset you want to translate the data to/from when talking to the db (though the latter is not recommended), this should work flawlessly.
