How Do I Create a New Widget?

I’ve been exploring the code a little, and I’m starting to think that creating a new widget is a bit of a large task.
From what i can tell I would need to alter code in three files... mutate_tmplvars.dynamic.php, tree.php and tmplvars.format.inc.php...

I’m hoping that my initial impression is incorrect, and that there is some simpler way to create, include and use a new widget.

Any help, response and or direction would be greatly appreciated.

You are correct; in the 0.9.x series, it is not possible to add user-defined widgets. But you can accomplish this virtually by using snippets and/or @EVAL.

In Revolution (currently in final alpha phase), such core extensions will be possible without hacking core files.
