    Hi,
Ive used bother joomla and modx as content management systems for some time now. However this is the first time Ill be developing a custom application.

Im a beginner php developer. I dont know if I should take this project on with ModX or Joomla.

The ordering system will consist of a number of pages and will need to react differently based on what the user enters.

I thought Joomla would be easier because of the vast amount of components already available.

What do you think? Im looking for some general direction given that Ive never developed anything custom on either system.

    Regards
    Mitch

I think we need more specific details for what the ordering system actually does/how it’s expected to work.

Probably the best way I can explain what Im trying to build is using a home builder as an example.

        Im a home builder.

A user logs onto the website and wants to buy a home. They have three options (an apartment, a house or a beach villa).

After selecting an option the component would show them all the relevant floor plans to choose from.

Then they are asked a series of questions about colours, carpets and optional extras. Each optional extra may have additional questions if chosen.

Finally, the user would be given a cost (by adding up all the features and extras) and the admin is sent the order sheet with what the user has wants so he can build it.

Does that help at all? Thanks for your time smiley

          Hey smitch,

I moved to modx because custom applications is so much easier with modx.

          The easiest way:
          - Create 3 documents (Apartment, House, Beach Villa)
          - For each document, create a TV for each option. If the option has an additional cost, create a TV for that as well. (until we have multi-TV arrays, we have to do this)
          - Use Ditto to show the three pages with links to each page.
          - When the user clicks to a page, show eform with all of the option TVs. Use JS to show the price.
          - On send, send the builder an email

That’s a dead simple way to make this work. You might need to use some eForm events to create the form based on the TVs, but that’s easier than creating a custom app.
          - Why is this good?
          1. You can add/modify options for the form easily with modx TV editor.
          2. You can easily add more types of houses in the future.
          3. You’re client will love how stupid easy it is to modify the values of the custom options
