I can't get the friendly url's to work all of my alias' redirect to home page

Hey, I turned on friendly url’s, and set the prefix to page. On one of my documents I set the document alias to attorneys. Now when I go to the url http://spanglerdesign.com/test/Mulligan1/index.php?page=attorneys.html, it redirects me to my home page.

However when I go to the url http://spanglerdesign.com/test/Mulligan1/index.php?q=attorneys.html I get the right document.

That page as you entered it does not exist, so you get your home page (which is the default "Not Found" page). With friendly URLs on, it would be http://spanglerdesign.com/test/Mulligan1/page.attorneys.html

The whole point of friendly URLs is to get rid of the index.php business in your urls.

Yeah I have been following the wiki. The prefix doesn’t seem to be working for me though, I tried going to http://spanglerdesign.com/test/Mulligan1/page.attorneys.html and I got a 404 error page.

If I use a blank for the prefix the url should then be http://spanglerdesign.com/test/Mulligan1/attorneys.html correct? I have tried doing that and I still get a 404 not found page.

Have you edited the .htaccess file to add the subdirectory to the rewrite base?

I thought you didn’t have to edit the .htaccess unless you are using the modrewrite style of friendly url’s. The way I understand it, if I have a prefix of nothing, with friendly url’s set to yes, my url path should just be http://spanglerdesign.com/test/Mulligan1/attorneys.html since it uses my document alias as the name. So my alias would be attorneys, and then it appends the .html

If I do need to use .htaccess, I am on shared hosting will it still work? My directory is test/Mulligan1

You can add a .htaccess file to any folder, even on a shared server
