I’m in the initial phases of a big project and I’ve been trying out various CMSs by building little skeleton sites to see how they work. I set up modx 1.0 (evo I believe) and between very good access controls and the fact that I was able to write an actual line of real PHP and pass it a var right away got my attention. That said, I’m going to spend the next few days building my little test site and I was wondering if I should really be developing in 2.0 since it is so close to completion? If I’m going to learn a new system it makes sense to learn the newest one in some ways, but if there is less documentation or it isn’t ready for prime-time perhaps I should stick with the 1.0 version? recommendations?

    thanks!

This is my first day evaluating ModX and I was wondering the same too. From what I can gather from searching the forums and other docs is that, if you are likely to NOT USE 3rd party plugins, snippets etc or your own custom code, then it might be OK to learn the beta (revolution). As is usual for a beta however, it is not advised for a production site.

This is always a tough decision and depends on your needs.

Revo is definitely the future (although Evo will be around for a long time) and the latest Revo builds are relatively stable. Not all the add-ons are translated, however, (e.g. no MaxiGallery) so something you need might be missing. If you go with Revo, you might want to wait for Beta-4 which should be out in a week or two.

In addition, the permissions system is quite different in Revo and the documentation on it is still fairly sparse. I’ve tried a couple of times and I still don’t understand it. That goes both ways, though. If you have complex permission needs and multiple users, it may be harder to convert the site to Revo than to start in Revo.

If your site is relatively simple and you won’t be making major changes to it, you could just stay with Evo. If you have complex snippets and/or plugins in mind, Revo might be a better choice as long as the add-ons meet your needs.

I hope this has done you more good than harm. wink It’s tough to calibrate answers to the Evo/Revo question.

actually, I just installed revo and without a dummy site and very sparse documentation I’m lost. I’m going to keep trying to develop in evo.
