301 Redirects

I have created 301 redirects for my modx site in an htaccess file in the root directory and when you directly type in the new urls, they work and take you to the right page. When you type in the old address it redirects to http://www.domain.com/newurl.php?q=oldurl.htm and shows a 404 error.
Below is an example of one of the redirects in my htaccess file.

Redirect 301 /oldurl.htm http://www.domainname.com/newurl.php

Any suggestions? I’m stumped!

Are you using friendly URL’s? Do you have the FURL suffix set as ".php"? If not, why are your redirects to .php pages?

yes, I am using friendly urls and I do have the suffix set as .php

They have to come before the rewrite rules.

Just tried that, didn’t fix the problem.

@Rachel, I would recommend Virtual Aliases it’s a lot easier - http://www.stanback.net/code/modx/virtual-aliases.html make sure you add the fix from this post to the script if you’re using suPHP on your server - http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,26235.msg160366.html#msg160366

With Virtual Aliases each page has a template variable that can hold different possible redirects. So if you deleted loads of pages you want to re-direct to your sites index.php you would simply add (per line) old-url, older-url, even-older-url to the index.php page TV.

I’m having the same problem.

my htaccess file is roughly

Redirect 301 /oldpage.asp http://newpage.php
...
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA]

which generates the url http://newpage.php?q=oldpage.asp

I have furls on with .php suffix and full paths

so what is happening is that the redirect completes successfully but then the rewrite rule appends ?q=oldpage.asp to this. I do not understand how this happens as I would expect, if the rewrite rule were to act on the original url input by the user, that we would get http://index.php?q=oldpage.asp

I have a redirect list of about 2200 documents as I am migrating an old static site to modx and so .htaccess is really the only option for me.

Is there anyone with more mod rewrite experience then me who can work this out?

I think you would be able to use a shorter syntax (I didn’t test this!):



And place it above this part of code:

awesome, that saved me a few hours. The shorter syntax does work but n.b newdir needs to be relative to the root not the sub dir containing the .htaccess file
