Well, if it’s shared hosting, you could be sharing the actual physical server with literally hundreds of others. But if it’s only happening with the one snippet, then it’s probably not that.

Maybe it’s triggering something in the mod_security? It can do weird things sometimes. Check this out...

I thought I would give DH shared hosting a try to see if it could stand up (since the price can’t be beat, and in all the years I’ve used them for static sites, no problems whatsoever).

I haven’t been notified of anyone else experiencing this problem, and I can definitely "make" it happen by installing lastUpdate, and fix it be un-installing it, so my suspicions lie there for the time being. But I’ll keep an eye out on performance.

Is there a (reasonably priced) host you can recommend? Would VPS be a more reliable route, if trouble does rear its head?

Well, as far as I know there are a number of MODx users on DreamHost, do a search in the form field above to see what comes up.

I personally prefer a VPS, but then my first Linux install was Slackware 1 on a laptop with 4mb (that’s right, mb) of RAM, and right now I’m living on a Solaris unmanaged VPS and spending a lot of time in iTerm at the command line. So this may not be everyone’s cuppa. I’ve had very nice VPS with very comprehensive control panels, but they do cost more than $15 a month, which is what I’m paying for my Solaris sweetie.

I’d be inclined to play with that snippet; remove all the content and save it empty, then start adding line by line until I found out what was gumming up the works.

I won’t belabor this, but if I do prune it and add back incrementally, can the offending bits cause any damage to the database, or does the db just react badly until the offending bits are removed?

Also, when backup is used, does that interact with the db at all, or simply copy it (like a save-as)? Now that I think of it, I had a bit of the same trouble (but I also had a faulty setup) when I ran a backup, so just asking dumb questions to doublecheck.
