I tried variations of that but when I remove the no borders statement from the H1 the bottom border will reappear in IE6. I am going to leave it as its just two short lines of code and seems to fox the problem.
However if this does have something to do with the alignment of the H1 image with IE6 then its worth further study.
How much time have we all waisted tracking down these BS issues with IE?

update: switching the top margin from 8px to -6px seems to the trick!
