Hi all , here we go with my first post ....
Have been playing with Modx for a few days now (along with a whole truck load of other CMS) and think this is defintley the one for me !! Intuitive , expandable ... and damn free !!! Great stuff !!
My one niggling thought as i take my first steps into CMS , is how to control a clients input (specifically with MODx).
I am working for a client who is sending me a steady stream of websites to design (quite basic brochure sites , but with the option to update content etc...) , i will design the full XHTML/CSS sites then import into MODx , then forward to client for them to make future updates .... but i am thinking that at some point they could just decide ’hey , why dont WE design everything from within MODx , we dont need this guy anymore!!’ .. which kinda worries me , is there anyway with MODx to limit what they can and cant do , or is it a lose/lose situation ??

MODx has built in the options of creating Manager Users and then restricting what they can do via the Roles both of which you access via the Security tab inside the Manager.

Well, since MODx is a free program, anybody can download and install it.
If, however, you mean is it possible to limit what a client can do to an installed copy of MODx, yes, with manager users, roles, manager user groups and document groups you can control just about everything a given manager user can do. You can easily limit them to nothing more than adding/editing documents in certain folders, or managing a gallery.
Also, in the site configuration, there is a feature where you can prevent non-Administrator users from creating new documents in the root level of the document tree.
On the other hand, I have never yet met a client who had the time or inclination to do anything more than update their content, so unless you’ve got a really unusual client I don’t think you have anything to worry about.
I’ve had to beg clients to update the content and, often, they still won’t do it. I’ve asked questions that had to be answered before I could fix an obvious problem with a site and had them go unanswered for weeks (sometimes months).
I’m with Susan on this one.

Another couple of quick questions ,
1. I have a few sites i have done for these guys already that they would now like converting (valid XHTML/CSS layouts , 3 pages to each) .. is their an option within MODx to add a full site (html pages , images etc) and how easy is it to use ??
2.How easy / how much training would be required for your non-tech user , to update say the ’News’ page and will it stick to CSS i have originall laid out ??

The short answer is "no," I’m afraid. The good news, though, is that the manual import is not all that bad. I’ve created an information page on porting a site to MODx here:

It’s new and probably a little sketchy, but it should give you an idea of what needs to be done.

This works very nicely in MODx. The content is very well separated from the styling. If you set it up properly, your users can only edit the content itself on new or existing pages with very little training.
