Another "Is MODx a good choice" question...

I have been digging into MODx for a day and I like what I see so far...

I might be doing a new site for a friend and am wondering if MODx will meet his requirements for the site he envisions.

Real briefly: The site will promote a series of fancy (very expensive) dinners and will feature nice course menus and wine parings. Each dinner will be held at a fresh restaurant location.

* Site needs to have great elegant visual appeal: good photos & CSS.
* Simple direct navigation.
* Site owner needs private back-end admin ability to create custom menus, wine lists, chef profiles and restaurant details without having to code html files by hand or use a FTP program. So this needs to work with a dynamic browser based database system.
* Have a dynamic calendar that lists the dates, addresses and links to maps for each dinner.
* Be able to sell tickets to online customers with a secure easy credit card system that will be comfortable for customers.
* Site text must be able to handle French, German and Italian punctuation (character accents) for the menus and wine names etc.
* Handle a form for users to to sign up for an email list with each new contact placed into a growing email/contact database.
* Site must be able to grow as the "project" grows.

I am sure a custom created back-end apps system would work here. Problem is there is not enough in the budget to hire a Ruby developer etc.

So, could MODx handle most of the above list? Anything it could not handle and why?

That site is very straightforward for MODx to handle. I’d suggest using FoxyCart for the sales end, Mail Chimp for the email list handling, and Jared’s upcoming simple calendar system that should be out early next week for the calendar. The rest is up to the designer/IA role to get right for the most part.

I will look into those modules.

In the meantime I have to learn how to use MODx. While its a year out of date I did read that 90 page PDF download that helps explain the whole system. Some of reading was very helpful. It looks like MODx has most of the bases covered. Some of the explanation could have been a little clearer with some step bt step examples.

Still, after messing around with several CMS system installs and initial tests I think i have found the right CMS for me...
