Installation Issues around databases

Hi everybody

I have managed to upload Modx to my server. I am using a Linux Server with 5 my SQL databases available and running (so, the pitch says) PHP 4 or 5.

I have not created a database for Modx and the instructions say that the installer will attempt to create one for me. In that case, what should I enter as database login name and password (if I have no database) as the instructions prompt me to enter these details?

I get as far as the pre-install validation page where I get the error message "Database connection failed"

Do I need to fiddle with My SQL on the server?
Do I need to create a database, if so, how?

Your answers and help are very much appreciated.

You have to have a username/password in order to connect to the MySQL engine. Then you can either create a new database, if that user has permissions to do so, or specify an existing database to connect to, again if that user has permissions to connect to that database. MySQL user validation is a top-down process, so you connect to the engine before you connect to any specific database before you can access any given tables.

Okay, me too. I have just done the install of modx, created a database called multimedia,
and then I get to the test database conenction and collations entry boxes page.

When I click on the blue link to test the connection I get nada.
I am using IE and in the status bar at bottom left the error is pointing to connection.js

It’s been set to 777 permissions.

I’ve got MySQl 5.1.42 and PHPMyAdmin 3.1.0 and PHP 5.3.0 versions running.
