When I try to edit a document ModX tells me that another user is currently editing the same document and to wait. However, this has been happening for a long time now and I don;t think the user could be working on the document that long. Any suggestions? Doesn’t ModX automatically log out after awhile?

Use Tools -> Remove Locks.
