Why are my pages not publishing?

I just installed modx and everything was fine but the only page that is live is the index.php welcome page. Even though the pages have the "Published?" option checked, I still can’t view the pages. I am using friendly URLs and the home page alias index.html doesn’t work, or pages like contact-us.html, etc. Any ideas?

Note: The regular url format works (ie: index.php?id=1). So the pages are there but just can’t access them using the friendly URLs -- and yes I do have them turned on and have .html as the suffix.

I just discovered that my problem was with the .htaccess file. Since I installed modx in a sub-directory off of root, then the .htaccess file required a change to the RewriteBase rule to include the sub-directory.
