problem with installation

I tried 2 install modx on my homemade server,
but while connection with database the setup was stopped and next setup page didn’t load conpletely (blank page with a head only).

My soft:
WinXP SP2,
Apache 2.2 (imho working properly, common htmp and php are opened by browser),
PHP 5.2,
MySQL 5.0 Server (new database wasn’t added, it must be created by modx setup i thought, on appropriate modx install page i type default root login (root) and new pass that i use in MySQL administation tool (MYSQL Tools)).

What should i do with MySQL or Modx to complete the installation process?

I really recommend starting with XAMPP.

Just FYI, troubleshooting custom compiles on a local machine tends to be very time consuming to say the least.
