How to create a basic RSS feed?

I have searched high and low, but still do not understand how to create a basic feed in MODx?

Anyone want to give a basic tutorial?

I was able to do it for the first time a few weeks ago. You create a document set to "not show in menu", with an alias like "feed.rss", a blank template and in the Page settings tab a content type of text/xml. For content, it has only the Ditto call:

That’s all I did; this site actually has three different feeds, the Ditto calls just have different startID values.

I’ve created the rss feed document, and it’s a very nice xml file. Now... how do I deal with with a link to "subscribing" to the feed? If I just make a link to the document, some browsers just display the raw xml file, some pretty it up, some offer different ways of subscribing.

This is why I use FeedBurner to serve all my feeds. It handles all of that very nicely, and even formats the raw xml a little more nicely for direct browser access (and includes subscription links to a variety of services). Plus the statistics of how many subscribers is pretty useful too.

I know absolutely nothing about rss. How would I integrate feedburner into modx?

The simple answer is... You wouldn’t.

It is not something you can integrate INTO MODx. It is a service provided by http://feedburner.com.
You go to there website and give them the URL of the document that outputs your XML RSS feed.

There are a couple of steps there, but the user interface of the site is pretty informative, and since this isn’t really a support site for feedburner the chances of getting questions related to the feedburner service answered would be infinitely better if you asked them at http://forums.feedburner.com/

OK, I understand about feedburner.
My questions now are:

How do I create an rss feed? And how would it work?



In this example, is &startID the document that the RSS feed is generated from?
The start in &startID implies that it is the first of n documents.
Also, when there is a change, is it a change to the same doc?
Or a new document that is created?
Can I create an RSS feed from a folder of non-sequential ID docs?

This is no biggie, I’d just like to understand it.

The page where the Ditto call is needs to be set to type/xml, and given an alias of whatever.rss, and no template. You probably don’t want it to show in your menu, either.

Then it will generate a page, with raw xml, using the documents in the folder(s) specified (but not including that folder/document) to make the feed from.

It’s up to the client to deal with the xml page.

So, if you wanted to create a couple different feeds on your site, you would just create different whatever.rss docs pointing to different folders?
