This is driving me nuts. I’ve got a fairly complex setup of many users and lots of user groups and resource groups... my thought is that something inside MODx snapped during one of the upgrades, because stuff has been really wonky in the manager.
When I edit a user and try to add a user to a user group, I get an error saying "User is already in that Group!"... but that user is NOT in that group. The user is in one of the groups that is a CHILD of the group, but that’s not the same thing. When I log in as this user, the user does not have permissions to view pages that belong to the research group that the parent research group has access to. Something done broke!
Any ideas?

It kind of sounds like a bug to me.
You might try deleting the user from the child group, adding them to the parent group, then re-adding them to the child group.

Thanks Bob. This is a bug somehow... I can add the user to the parent group via the API. We’re talking about over a hundred users with membership in 3 or more user groups each, so .... ugh... I really feel like the API shifted in some startling ways over the last couple updates. A lot of my code and tools had to be refactored unexpectedly.

You were right Bob: after I deleted the other group memberships, I was able to add the user to the correct user groups.

Lucky guess.
