install and learn?

I have a site already but would like to learn how to use MODx.
Can I install it onto my site’s server without compromising the existing site?
If I decide not to use MODx can I then remove the appropriate files and go back.

Best would be to install MODx in a subdirectory or, if you have the possiblilty, to install on a subdomain.

or install it on your computer using XAMPP (e.g.) http://www.apachefriends.org/de/xampp.html to play around

WAMP is also a good option. http://www.wampserver.com/en/

Are your existing site just html -> index.html? Then you could install MODx in root and then run it..
