Correction the images do show in IE8, but not IE7, i’m using Adobe Browser Lab for testing.
When we have had that issue it has been because the images were saved as CMYK.

CMYK and saving them at a dpi higher than 72 has given me issues too.
Make sure your images are RGB and at 72dpi.
