Double // forward slash with Friendly URLs

I am sure that this is to do with System settings so who do I get rid of the ’//’ in links.

Currently, all my links are coming out as

http://www.mydomain.com//page.html

Are you sure to have [tt]<base href="[(site_url)]" />[/tt] in the [tt]<head>[/tt] of the templates in use? (in case of Evo)
What is the content of your [tt].htaccess[/tt] file?

I had it as [[++site_url]]

Actually, this seems to remedy the issue in Firefox but IE stops reading the stylesheet!?

Any other ideas?
