I see there are a few e-commerce solutions for ModX. Is anyone using them? Do they work well with PayPal and PayPal pro? I have an immediate need to build an e-commerce site, am now convinced I want to use ModX as much as possible and need to know if this is the way to go.

Would love to see some examples of what others have done with explanations of how they made it happen.

    Thanks in advance!

Yeah, this is a common topic in the forums. The one solution that stands out to me is FoxyCart -- they don’t get in the way of the CMS because they don’t function as a module or plugin, you simply post your forms to them, and they handle the transactions. You get an XML feed back detailing what happened. This is more work in some ways, because it’s entirely up to you to figure out how you want to list your products, but it doesn’t impose any arbitrary limitations on your catalog... make your CMS do whatever you want, and when you’re done shopping, post the form to FoxyCart.

There are a LOT of other options out there... there are many eCommerce CMS’s (e.g. Magento, OsCommerce, OXID), but in my opinion, all of them are pretty limited in their CMS functionality, and nothing I’ve seen comes close to MODx in its templating flexibility.

The other route is a plugin/module tactic... where you add code to your CMS. There are limitations to this approach as well... your environment, database, maintaining the payment gateways, etc.

If you can stand the $15/month fee, FoxyCart seems a good way to go in my opinion -- it isolates the eCommerce $$$ stuff safely off-site, and it doesn’t make poor attempts at trying to organize your products. It does its thing, and I can do mine. It’s a different approach, but I like it a lot... I realize that it’s not the simplest to implement, and it may not meet your needs.

        Foxy-Cart looks interesting.
Are there any E-commerce solutions for Modx that don’t require a monthly subscription fee? I work with a non-profit publisher that would like to set up an online order form/processing, but the current orders are around 15-20 books a month, which would not justify a $15 fee every month.

For seriously tight budgets, you can’t beat the simplicity of eForm sending you and email with order details, or slightly more advanced is putting up a PayPal link for a product.
