That’s because you wasn’t logged in when you’re reading the thread.
SMF always marks it as read when the user session is available.
Try to check your post’s replies by going to the link at the top right menu of this forum: Show new replies to your posts. Open them one by one. Since then, you’ll get the upcoming replies.

no, i mean, while i was logged in, i went to the link that says "Show new replies to your posts", and it was empty, but then when i navigated to the thread, i saw new posts that i had not read yet.
i noticed the email alert says "More replies may be posted, but you won’t receive any more notifications until you read the topic."
so it’s possible i just did not notice the other replies. but it seemed that more replies were added after i read the thread, and i did not get alerts.
