EDIT: Well, isn’t this funny. After trying a lot of things for a week and after just posting this message I found the problem:

Xdebug. I forgot that was the only change I made to my server. I had no idea Xdebug could slow things down that much.

Still wondering about the cache leaving files and folders, but I might do that as a separate thread. Or check again after upgrading to 2.1.

    ---------------------

I have a strange problem that I’ve tried to figure out with no success.

I have this site with 2000 docs and well above 30.000 users. My goal is to have a very fast site, so I’ve put the site up on a VPS with nothing else on it. Or actually I’ve tried it on three different VPSes.

The problem is this: At first the site is very fast, 0.2 sec for a single page to DOM ready when cached and 1 sec to put it into cache.

On the first VPS it run like this for a moth, then suddenly times went up to 0,5/3 seconds for cached/uncached. Then I complained to the VPS staff, and they put me on a faster server they said. Times got even slower, 0.7/4 sec.

4 seconds for generating a page into cache is a disaster as every time I publish a new resource I have to regenerate the cache. 2000 docs times 4 seconds. That’s over 2 hours. And I have to do it 2-4 times a day. Not fun at all. Perhaps there is a way to publish new resources without emptying the cache, but still, that doesn’t solve the slow response times.

So I changed to another VPS, this time on Vps.net.

Very fast at the beginning, then slower like on the first VPS. A friend has a vps on Vps.net too, I did a test case there before setting up my own VPS.net server. Same thing there, slower times after a while. As an example: I’ve made a test page where only thing happening is getResources generates links for all 2000 docs, unchached. Empty template. At first it rendered in 12 seconds, now it is up to 48 seconds.

So, could there be something in Modx that make it to be so much slower after a while?

I have noticed that when emptying the cache it leaves some files in some dirs and a lot of empty folders in core/cache/web/resources, is that normal behavior?

Or what do you experts think, could it be that I just have had bad luck with my choices of VPS providers?

What would be your best guess?

Any suggestions how to test for the problem? What would you do in this situation?

This is driving me mad, every time I change IP when moving to another vps all outgoing mail is treated as spam for a week or so.

I use Ubuntu 10.4 for my servers with webmin/virtualmin as panel.

Right now the vps is down for some reason (?) so I can’t give exact configuration, but it is very recent versions of PHP and mysql as standard in 10.4. Plenty of memory.

Nothing special on the pages I’m testing on, 5 calls to getResources and a call to Quip latest comments. Of course other pages are heavier but I don’t test on those.

If no one has any idea, please at least tell me if you believe this is because of Modx or because of something else.

I’m a bit desperate here, this site is kind of a community and I need to get it to work fine. At least better than on my 6 years old Mambo I just converted from.

    Thanks,

    Anders

ps. I must say, Modx is perfect for making very custom community sites, I can do totally anything I want without hacking anything. Just wanted to add that! tongue

#1 recommendation - cache Wayfinder. It isn’t surprising to see 50% improvement in page loads with Wayfinder output cached, especially on very large menu sets.

Also, go managed private server. It’s a lot of coin each month, but the performance is phenomenal since you have exclusive use of all server resources. We lease one for development and to host mission-critical sites, and in three years have never have any problems with performance or downtime whatsoever.
