Is the base tag necessary in Evo 1.0.5? What does it do (if it isn’t too much to ask)? Are there any other tags that should be included in pages like this one? Thanks!

It’s required if you use "friendly alias path" configuration option. Other than that, you don’t need it.

Well, it’s worth a try seeing if the site works as expected without it. Any time you use relative URLs (for images, css and js files for example) the browser may or may not get the full URL correct; this meta tag tells the browser specifically how to complete the relative URL for requesting the file.
