    Hi,

One of our network admins decided to implement password rotation and change the ftp password on the subdomain I’m using for development. I was logged into the manager and started getting errors while going into the system setting. Thinking that it was just holding onto cached credentials I logged out and now I get "An unknown error occurred while trying to log in". Originally the ftp password was inherited from the parent domain so I changed it back to those settings but I’m still having the same problem.

The site itself is working, so the database connection is ok.

This is Revolution 2.0.8 on a Linux server.

Does anybody know what we broke and how to go about fixing it?

BTW - since this is a development environment the setup folder is still in place if that helps.

    Thanks,
    Pat

      1. Sorry, I’m confused as to what you’re talking about. About the FTP password? Or the manager password? Or something else?

      2. FYI, manager passwords are independent of FTP passwords.

      3. It doesn’t sound like (personally) you or your co-worker broke anything.

      4. It sounds like you have a lost password/manager log-in issue.

      5. Manager passwords can be reset easily, from the CPanel, and you can even DIYS. View http://bobsguides.com/modx-newbie-faq.html and view the password related FAQ (i.e. 3rd from the bottom).

      6. I would go to CPanel, and change the FTP password from inside the CPanel. With many hosts it’s the same password as that of the CPanel.

      7. If worse comes to worst, I suggest you call the hosting company, they will reset the password for you.
        Best regards,
        Mike

First, try deleting all the files in the core/cache directory and clearing your browser cache and cookies.

If that doesn’t work, try an upgrade install.

If you’re still in trouble, you might use cPanel and PhpMyAdmin to look at the DB to see if there are any crashed tables you can repair.

Thanks for the responses. To answer your questions-

          1. Sorry, I’m confused as to what you’re talking about. About the FTP password? Or the manager password? Or something else?
Only the FTP password changed. I was logged into the manager when he did this and the system settings started throwing errors at me.

          4. It sounds like you have a lost password/manager log-in issue.
I don’t think this is the case since I was logged in when the problem started. I’ve been logging in multiple times per day for the last week so the password is kind of imprinted on my brain at this point. (Plus I have it on a sticky pad on my monitor). It’s also a different error. When you enter an incorrect password you get an "Incorrect username or password" popup, this is an unknown error in red, right on the login form.

          5. Manager passwords can be reset easily, from the CPanel, and you can even DIYS. View http://bobsguides.com/modx-newbie-faq.html and view the password related FAQ (i.e. 3rd from the bottom).
Yep, I had already tried this with no luck. I also copied the original encrypted password and tried putting it back in place.

          6. I would go to CPanel, and change the FTP password from inside the CPanel. With many hosts it’s the same password as that of the CPanel.
          7. If worse comes to worst, I suggest you call the hosting company, they will reset the password for you.
I did this. Since it’s a test server I had it set to use the same credentials as the parent domain and it’s been changed back to those settings. My FTP profile in Filezilla works so I know the credentials are back to their original setting.

FTP password has nothing at all to do with MODx. The only thing that might be a problem is if the FTP username was also changed, and then only if your system is configured to use some kind of suexec which changes the user of the script to its owner rather than the webserver user (which in the case of .php files is the "person" who is running the script). I would be more inclined to think that you have a cookie or session problem. Have you cleared your browser cookies for the domain as well as the browser cache?

              Hi,

I didn’t think the FTP password should have anything to do with MODx but I’m still pretty new to it, and this happened right after it was changed.

I tried clearing the cache and cookies while following BobRay’s suggestions. I just now tried the next step of running an upgrade install and got a 500 error so it looks like a server problem. Weird since the front end is still up and running.

Thanks for the responses, looks like one for our web host.
